What kinds of problems can Dr. Holland assist with?

Dr. Holland offers four primary coaching & consulting services: Life Transition Coaching, Expert Witness Services, Research Consultation, and Dissertation Assistance.

Life Transition Coaching: As a life coach, Dr. Holland works with clients who are struggling with loss, major life transitions (e.g., caregiving, retirement, divorce, health problems), or work/life balance. He takes an integrative approach to life transition coaching and focuses on cultivating emotional strength, developing self-care rituals,
and finding meaning in the face of adversity.

Expert Witness Services: As a licensed clinical psychologist and expert in bereavement and trauma, Dr. Holland is available to offer consultation, assessment, and testimony in cases where there are questions about the degree of emotional suffering experienced after a death or traumatic life event (e.g., motor vehicle accident, workplace accident, or hospital accident). He can also speak to issues related to competency to stand trial and criminal insanity.

Research Consultation: Dr. Holland is happy to assist with a variety of behavioral research projects, including projects that involve program evaluation, refinement of a questionnaire or assessment tool, and/or examination of opinions and attitudes. He can help with all stages of the project, from research design and data collection to data analysis and presentation of the results.

Dissertation Assistance: Dr. Holland provides assistance to graduate students conducting social science research for a thesis or dissertation. Students seeking advanced degrees in psychology, counseling, sociology, social work, family studies, nursing, political science, or medicine are often a good fit. Does Dr. Holland accept health insurance?

Dr. Holland is not accepting any new insurance clients for psychotherapy or counseling.
However, he is accepting new life transition coaching clients. Life transition coaching services are typically not covered by insurance. If you have an insurance plan that provides some benefits for life coaching, Dr. Holland can provide you with a superbill so you can seek reimbursement from your insurance company.

What’s the difference between life transition coaching and therapy?

Psychotherapy and counseling are considered healthcare services and, as such, are covered under many insurance programs. Typically, psychotherapy is offered to clients who have a diagnosable mental health problem and are seeking to get back to a “normal” level of functioning. In contrast, life transition coaching is focused more on helping you to perform at your peak and live your best life. For more information on the difference between therapy and life coaching, see Dr. Holland's article, which explores this topic in greater depth.

If I have a diagnosed mental health condition, can I receive life coaching from Dr. Holland?

Life transition coaching is appropriate for clients who are having serious problems but are generally stable. If you have been recently hospitalized for a psychiatric problem or are having thoughts about harming yourself, the first priority should be to find a local therapist and/or psychiatric prescriber who can work with you to develop a treatment plan. You can find mental health practitioners in your local area on Psychology Today. Better Help also offers virtual counseling internationally.
